Begin your visit at the Bund, Shanghai's celebrated waterfront promenade. Its historic buildings provide a striking contrast to the futuristic skyline of Lujiazui across the Huangpu River. The Bund is particularly atmospheric in the evening, when the towers on both sides of the river are illuminated. Visitors can walk along the waterfront or take a Huangpu River cruise to see the city from a different perspective.
Across the river from the Bund lies Lujiazui, Shanghai's modern financial district, home to the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower and Shanghai World Financial Center. For panoramic views, visit one of the district's observation decks. On a clear day, they offer impressive views across the city and along the Huangpu River.
Yu Garden is a classical Chinese garden featuring traditional pavilions, ponds, bridges, rock formations and landscaped courtyards, offering a peaceful introduction to the garden traditions of the Ming dynasty. The surrounding Old City area is filled with traditional-style buildings, shops, teahouses and food stalls — an excellent place to try local snacks and purchase souvenirs.
Visitors interested in Chinese history and art can explore the Shanghai Museum, known for its collections of ancient bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, paintings, sculptures and jade. The West Bund, Power Station of Art and China Art Museum are among the options for modern and contemporary art. Shanghai is a rewarding city to explore on foot, particularly in the historic areas west of the city centre. The tree-lined streets around Wukang Road, Anfu Road, Fuxing Park and Sinan Mansions feature historic residences, independent shops, bookshops and cafés, with the Wukang Building as the area's best-known landmark. Xintiandi's restored shikumen buildings and the narrow lanes of Tianzifang are also well worth a visit.

Famous for its classical gardens, canals and traditional architecture, Suzhou can be reached from Shanghai by high-speed train. It is a popular day trip, although an overnight stay will provide more time to explore the city at a relaxed pace.

Situated beside West Lake, Hangzhou is known for its natural scenery, temples, tea plantations and historic sites. High-speed trains connect Shanghai and Hangzhou, making the city another possible day trip or overnight destination.
